Skateboarding in the 1960s


Before it evolved into the somewhat counterculture sport that it is today, skateboarding was seen as a fun and carefree activity to be enjoyed by youth and adults alike. This black and white photo series, shot by Bill Eppridge for LIFE magazine five decades ago, illustrates the way in which skateboarding was enjoyed in a more laid-back and less frowned-upon manner in 1960s Manhattan.
