KANYE WEST TALKS WEDDING PHOTO, APPLE/BEATS DEAL, & BEAUTIFYING THE INTERNET

Kanye West made an appearance at the Translation seminar at the Cannes Lions festival on Tuesday. During his conversation with Translation CEO Steve Stoute and venture capitalist Ben Horowitz, the hip-hop impresario revealed that famed photographer Annie Leibovitz pulled out of his wedding at the last minute (“Maybe she was scared about the idea of celebrity”).

The wedding photo that Kim Kardashian posted on Instagram took “like four days” to edit because the colors on the flower wall didn’t look right. But he says it was worth it because it became the most liked image on Instagram.

Plus, he once again shared his admiration for Apple founder Steve Jobs and weighed in on Apple’s $3 billion dollar purchase of Beats by Dre.

So what’s next for the creative genius? Yeezus wants to bring his design aesthetic to the Internet, starting with a redesign of Instagram.

Read more Kanye quotables below.

On his inspiration: “The only thing I think can be an inspiration to me is the fact that I get bashed so much but create so much. Just know that if you really want to be a boxer, you’re gonna get your face beat up constantly, but then you may end up being Mayweather or Ali.”

On the power of endorsement: “I couldn’t have rapped if Jay Z hadn’t endorsed me. Eminem wouldn’t have been as successful if Dr. Dre hadn’t endorsed him.”

On color correcting his wedding photo: “Now, can you imagine telling someone who just wants to Instagram a photo, the No. 1 person on Instagram, that we need to work on the color of the flowered wall? But the fact that the No. 1 most liked photo has this certain aesthetic on it was a win for what the mission is—of raising the palette.”

On the importance of good design: “I believe that bad taste is vulgar. It’s like cursing. I think the world can be saved through design. Because what is the most distasteful thing someone can do? Kill someone. So, good taste is the opposite of that.”

On Steve Jobs: “Steve Jobs, as everyone knows, was my biggest influence. Just seeing the way he fought to make things easier for people. After he passed, I made it my life’s mission to do what he did inside of that company. I dream to help raise the palette and raise the taste level of a generation and also be involved with the production and distribution and advertising of that thing everyone’s begging for.”

On the Apple/Beats by Dre deal: “There would have been no Beats deal without [Jay Z's] Samsung deal. It showed the No. 1 company the importance of connecting with culture. The reason I said I didn’t like Samsung particularly is because throughout my entire life, because of how my parents raised me, I have to work with the No. 1. I can’t work with anyone but Jay Z, because he’s No. 1. I can’t be with any girl but Kim, because that’s the girl whose pictures I look at the most and get turned on by. I’m not going to represent any company but Louis Vuitton, because that’s No. 1. … Samsung is not quite Apple, but it showed that Jimmy [Iovine] and Dre would be able to connect with the No. 1 influencers.”

On beautifying the Internet: “The world as a whole is fucking ugly. The Internet as a whole is fucking ugly, too. But I’m not in the construction business. I said to [Instagram founder] Kevin [Systrom], why don’t you let us redo Instagram? Now, you know, Instagram is nice. It’s nice looking. I’m not knocking it. But just in general, everyone spends all of their time looking at their screens or their phones. And just as a simple task, we could clean that up.”

B&O Home Styling: Nick Wooster

On Another Level brought together two forward-moving entities, Nick Wooster and B&O PLAY, for a closer look at what it means to be a master in the field of design. With one focused on fashion and the other on audio, both take classic design elements and infuse them with simplicity, aesthetics, heritage and quality. To discover the similarities between the two, High Snobiety visited Wooster at his Christopher Street apartment in New York. Just like how B&O PLAY draws upon decades of design excellence, craftsmanship and product innovation from Bang & Olufsen, the New Yorker surrounds himself with contemporary pieces of furniture steeped in years of history and tradition. Take his Stephen Kenn couch, for instance. Like many other things in his living room, the couch is a true testament to heritage and style: handmade out of repurposed and untreated WWII military fabric, proudly revealing all of its glorious veteran history.

Everything else in his apartment, even the way his bed is positioned, has a tangible reason, too. Brought upon by his belief in Feng Shui, the Chinese philosophical system on how to harmonize one’s self with the universe, Wooster makes sure not to let the back of his bed face the door. “That’s bad Feng Shui,” he casually declares; simple to understand yet extremely difficult to master. However, it is precisely this mastery which sets experts like Nick Wooster and B&O PLAY apart.

The combination of Wooster’s impeccable taste with the philosophical system he subscribes to clearly demonstrates his enjoyment of mixing the old with the new. A sleek, flat-screen TV nestles between two metal shelves entirely stocked of worn work boots. Black-and-white vintage portraits collected from antique shops rest against the wall on a cleanly uncarpeted floor. And now, a pair of B&O PLAY headphones have been added to his artifact mix, blending in perfectly thanks to their own combination of uncompromising quality and contemporary aesthetics. Like Bang & Olufsen’s application of innovation in classic design, Wooster wholly embraces the simple leather over-ears into his confident, oft-photographed style.

Gazing out at the thriving West Village below, he says, “I could have lived in a bigger, newer apartment out in Chelsea, or somewhere else, but it’s just not the same.” Lest you think it’s all because of the trendy, New Yorker neighborhood, that’s not the only reason: “Every subway line you want is right here.”

A true New Yorker, indeed. Effortlessly in line with what’s on without sacrificing function or necessity.

Enjoy a rare look into Nick Wooster’s Christopher Street apartment above and furnish your apartment with the best audio gear on the market over at B&O PLAY’s online shop.

About Nick Wooster

10 Reasons to Wear a Luxury Watch on Your Wrist

A luxury timepiece can be as versatile as the gentleman sporting it. As a collector’s item for the connoisseur, as utility with high symbolic value or as a fashion accessory – they are far more than instruments that measure time. Here are 10 reasons, why high-end watches are inevitable for all men, who appreciate the exceptional and beautiful.

01. Jewelry: First of all, luxury watches are simply stunning. Watches can be pieces of exceptional beauty, just as any accompaniment, one might think. Watches, however, have a special status linked to the functional excuse of measuring the time. Even though wristwatches were initially worn by women, they are now, first and foremost, a male fashion accessory. And ultimately, it is the one item that can make the difference in a very thin scope of action a man wardrobe allows.

02. Emotional Value: Watches are attached with emotions, as it accompanies its wearer in good times and bad. Not only are they physically with you, but actually present when indicating the most precious good we have. As gifts received from our closest friends and family members, watches can mark special events in life such as milestone anniversaries, weddings or professional achievements. Quite commonly, they are passed along from one generation to the next. So there is a good chance that even your future great-grandson is going to spend time with your favorite timepiece on his wrist.

03. Perfection: Perfection is like the holy grail of watchmaking. Even the best manufacturers won’t ever reach it entirely, but they will always seek it with endless commitment. Not only from a time-measurement standpoint, but also regarding its aesthetics and quality of manufacturing, is the pursuit of perfection one of the key reasons to buy a luxury timepiece instead of a 3-dollars quartz watch.

04. Functionality: Your watch is always there when you need it. Sure, your iPhone or Android device will also provide you with the correct time measure. But after one or two days your battery is empty and you will need to recharge it. Also, it is not required to shut it down or take it off in airplanes, government buildings and other signal-transmission-free places. Additionally, taking a quick look at your wrist is way more convenient than rummaging in your pocket (That’s why some even consider the smartphone as a step backward to the “coat pocket time measurement”). Your smartphone might be able to do all the fancy stuff, but the watch is a simple and functional lifetime workhorse.

05. Punctuality: Punctuality is part of a gentleman’s code of conduct, reified by his watch. Next to actually supporting a successful time management, high-end watches are therefore also material artifacts that dignify the importance of time on a symbolic level.

06. Exclusiveness: There is no doubt that it is desirable to own something special that distinguishes you from most other people. There is no doubt that exclusiveness is about social status. However, wearing a prestigious brand can’t be reduced to the aspect of “showing off” in front of other people. The average person has never heard of names like Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC or Ulysse Nardin. For most watch aficionados, the motivation of owning something rare and unique primarily arises from the mere awareness of owning something exceptional, rather than paying attention to what others might think.

07. Mechanics: Compared to other utilities we encounter every day, the functioning of a watch is pretty simple. Its basic mechanism has been providing us with time measurement for hundreds of years. And yet there is so much innovation in a luxury watch, striving to achieve an even more accurate and durable time indication. Side effects: Setting free the (gentle-)man child.

08. Mobility: Yes. Even though they generally come without wheels, watches are quite mobile. Unlike a harem of sports cars or a selection of exclusive wines, you can take it anywhere without any notable effort.

09. Timelessness: Some of the previous points were already linked to the aspect of timelessness. But think of it, folks. What else in your life is designed and crafted for such a long period of time? Also in future generations, a watch will be based on the very same technical and aesthetical principles that it is today. That’s why high-end watches are not only produced, but actually worn for decades.

10. Statement: Do you prefer sporty divers or elegant dress watches? Maybe it is the history of model A or manufacturer B that arouses your interest?. The decision for a particular watch contributes to telling others who you are. Not only that, but also the mere fact of wearing a luxury watch reflects a bundle of inherent statements in and for itself. And a lot of them just perfectly match values that are quite commonly regarded as gentlemanlike.

History of Air Jordan Retros with “Nike Air” Branding

Jordan Brand’s impressive appetite-filling series of Retro releases over the last decade or so should have satiated even the hungriest of Air Jordan collectors and enthusiasts. Should have. The original Defining Moments Package of 2006, the Collezione in 2008, the Bin 23 Collection, the in-depth plot-driven Kilroy Pack – all of those and more gave us enough reason to perpetually shell out our savings to lace up in Jays, but one gaping hole continues to be left unfulfilled since 2001 – the appearance of the original Nike Air. It’s nothing more than a piece of molded plastic, but its absence was still a void that was eventually left ignored seeing that a return of Nike Air had less to do with production and more to do with brand identity (Jordan would branch out to form its own label, albeit under Nike, Inc.) – but the desire was still there. Even today, hardcore enthusiasts continue to shell out hundreds and hundreds of dollars to get their hands on Nike Air branded Jordan Retros from the 1999-2001 era – shoes that are on the cusp of complete physical breakdown.

Why is Nike Air so cherished? Because it’s the perfect embodiment of a Retro release. It’s the undeniable original form that we were graced with back in the late 1980s, so even the most well-done Air Jordan Retros – the Air Jordan VI ‘Infrared’ from the 2010 Pack release, the Air Jordan IV ‘Bred’ from 2008/2012, the Air Jordan V ‘Black/Metallic’ in 2007 to name a few – would be unable to achieve a 100% grade. The era from Air Jordan III to VI is considered by many to be the most lustrous period of the Air Jordan Golden Era (or when Tinker was the architect), and it just happens to be the same span that utilized the large Nike Air logo on the heel.

A quick side-note: The Air Jordan 1 and even the Air Jordan II shouldn’t be ignored either as both featured ‘Nike’ as well, but they aren’t exactly part of the exclusive III-VI fraternity. Without a large Nike Air branding and with someone other than Tinker behind the wheel, the two earliest chapters of the Air Jordan legacy are seen on a different regard.

Yesterday, Jordan Brand filled that twelve-year long gap by releasing the Air Jordan III Retro ’88. Like the original, these featured Nike Air on the heel as well as the inner lining, but the outsole was labeled with JORDAN rather than Nike Air – that detail alone would’ve made the MSRP more than it already was. Even at the elevated $200 MSRP, which to this date is the highest MSRP ever for a single Air Jordan Retro release (more than the Premio, but less than the single-pair Pack style releases like the 2006 Thunder/Lightning, the Levi’s Pack, etc.), droves of consumers swarmed their computers for the online-only release. The interesting detail of yesterday’s release was that it wasn’t a completely random or out-of-place occurence, but a calculated retelling of a memorable moment in Jordan’s career and sports history as a whole – the 1988 Dunk Contest. Twenty-five years ago, Michael took off from the free-throw line in acrobatic fashion and froze in mid-air to create an iconic piece of sports imagery that speaks volumes on motivation and human ability.

So with Jordan Brand using events in Jordan’s career to bring back original Air Jordans, will we see more Nike Air in the future? Perhaps the Air Jordan VI ‘Infrared’ to commemorate the first NBA Title? The Air Jordan IV ‘Bred’ as a throwback to ‘The Shot’? What we do know is that whatever wall was between the Retro and the original branding has been broken down to some degree, so enjoy this chronological review of every Air Jordan Retro to feature Nike Air and let us know what you think this signifies for future Retro releases.
